Meet the complex metrology needs of the semiconductor industry in this customer-facing role at a rapidly growing scale-up.

Chips are shrinking, becoming increasingly powerful and complex. But as a result, currently used metrology systems in the semiconductor industry no longer meet process control requirements. Nearfield Instruments offers the solution in terms of speed, precision and the capability of measuring the very latest, most complex 3D nanostructures. As a metrology application engineer, you will play a key role in identifying and meeting each customer’s metrology needs. What you’re going to do?

In your role, you will help the customer get the most out of our products and represent the voice of the customer towards to the central teams. You will assist the world’s leading chipmakers stay in control of their manufacturing processes by demonstrating the capabilities of our cutting-edge atomic force microscopy (AFM) systems on customer wafers. Your input will also contribute to R&D to meet future needs of our customers.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Identifying our customer’s metrology needs, for which you will work closely with marketing and sales colleagues and attend meetings with customers.

  • Demonstrating the capabilities of our products, performing measurements on customer wafers, and analysing the data generated.

  • Reporting and presenting your findings to our customers, showing the unique potential of our systems.

  • Creating measurement recipes in the customer fab, working closely with the customer. You will also conduct tests to ensure that specifications are met and train the engineers and operators of our customers.

  • Taking lead to specify and investigate issues related to measurement and data processing, in collaboration with Sales & Marketing, Customer Support and Development & Engineering colleagues to drive for issue resolution timely.

  • Working closely with colleagues in Development & Engineering and R&D to develop new measurement modes and metrology solutions, data processing algorithms, and improve user-friendliness and product performance. You will provide input based on your insights into our customers’ roadmaps, user experiences and needs.

  • Demonstrating customer-oriented attitude while performing responsibilities stated above.

Who you are

You thrive on working as an engineer in a customer-facing role at a deeptech scale-up, where interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial. Leveraging your communication skills, you effortlessly interact with customers and colleagues to secure the best possible metrology solutions for each customer’s needs. You are prepared to occasionally work outside office hours, as you’ll be sharing our demo and product development tool. Suffice to say this flexibility is reciprocated, as part of our drive to support your work-life balance.

You also have:

  • Experience in developing or using of metrology tools in a manufacturing environment.

  • Experience in collaborating directly with customers. Experience of working with or as semiconductor foundry customers is a plus.

  • Experience or a keen interest in atomic force microscopy. Your ability to learn quickly will help you bridge any gaps you may have in your knowledge and skills. 

  • A PhD or MSc in Physics, Mechatronics, Material Engineering or another relevant subject.

  • A good understanding of semiconductor manufacturing.

  • Experience in coding in MATLAB, Python or other relevant languages for data analysis and visualisation geared to improving communication with clients and colleagues. Experience of algorithm development is a plus.
