Job description

Nearfield Instruments brings together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop revolutionary high-throughput Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) systems, enabling atom-scale resolution 3D metrology at industry-level throughput. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced metrology machines for the semiconductor industry.

What will you be doing?

As a Senior Data Scientist in our R&D team, you will lead the development of advanced algorithms and machine learning models that enhance image quality, extract accurate nanoscale dimensions, and improve the overall metrology solution for our customers. You will own projects from concept to deployment, collaborating with physicists, application specialists, and engineers across disciplines.

  • Design physics-informed ML and hybrid models combining SPM forward physics with data-driven components.

  • Develop inverse modeling pipelines for nanoscale feature estimation and uncertainty quantification.

  • Create denoising, reconstruction, and anomaly detection algorithms for high-throughput metrology.

  • Lead the translation of prototypes into performant C++/Python/GPU implementations for on-tool deployment with verification and testing of KPIs.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align algorithm design with system constraints and customer needs.

  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to patents and technical publications.

Job requirements

What do we require from you?

  • PhD or MSc in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

  • 6+ years of experience in data science or ML for instrumentation or industrial sensing; semiconductor metrology experience is a plus.

  • Expertise in signal processing, inverse problems, uncertainty, quantification, and deep learning.

  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in C++ and GPU acceleration (CUDA) being a plus.

  • Experience with MLOps, containerization, and deploying models in production environments.

  • Experience with 3D computational geometry, pointcloud processing, or 3D mesh processing is a plus

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.

  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

What can you expect from us?

Besides a technically challenging role where you can utilize the full extent of your professional knowledge, we value your work-life balance and team spirit.
