Senior Mechanical Engineer

Help design and build ultra-precision metrology machines that accelerate manufacturing processes of the world’s leading chipmakers.

Full-time · Rotterdam

Taking the lead in the design and optimisation of the systems and features of unique metrology machines used by semiconductor manufacturers across the globe. That’s your challenge as a senior mechanical engineer at Nearfield Instruments in Rotterdam. Would you like to work at the forefront of metrology innovations, while rapidly growing your career?

What you’re going to do

Working on alternating projects, you will be in charge of an entire system or act as the tech lead of subsystems. You will develop, design and build new features and system changes that will meet our clients’ needs. As more machines are being put into operation by leading brands in the semiconductor industry, you will increasingly help drive customisation. And you will propose new designs to anticipate market needs.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Taking ownership of the mechanical design of our precision mechanical systems, delivering precision AND accuracy on the nm-scale;

  • Autonomously conceptualising and designing features and changes. Your designs will improve the quality of our products and reduce production costs, while meeting system requirements;

  • Developing testing processes, and testing and validating your designs. Suffice to say that you will design for manufacture and assembly;

  • Collaborating closely with interdisciplinary colleagues, including systems engineers, project managers, manufacturing engineers and field engineers. This will help you gain an in-depth understanding of the required capabilities of the system or e.g. issues faced during assembly or commissioning;

  • Liaising with suppliers to secure the feasibility of your designs;

  • Building working prototypes for beta testing and customer demonstration, e.g. of new customer-specific features;

  • Expanding your influence by giving direction to more junior engineers

  • Creating and reviewing technical drawings, plans and specifications, as well as documenting the design process in detail.

Who you’ll be working with

Your home base will be the ten-strong Mechanical Engineering team, which is part of the Design & Engineering department. As we are international team, diversity and inclusion come natural to us. We share a drive to deliver a high-quality, ultra-precision product, while working on the next generation of designs. Fostering an open, non-hierarchical and supportive atmosphere, we help and challenge each other, and welcome your ideas. We also give you all the coaching and training you need, and empower you to develop your role and skillset.

What you’ll get

At Nearfield Instruments, you’ll be joining the most creative minds in science and technology from all over the world. We share a drive and have the potential to become the leading metrology instruments manufacturer. This is your chance to visibly contribute to growing our company and building revolutionary machines for the global semiconductor industry. The benefits we offer include:

  • A salary matching your skills, expertise and experience;

  • A one-year contract, which we hope to convert into a permanent contract;

  • Benefits like a good pension scheme, a commuting allowance, and a discount on your health insurance;

  • A holiday allowance of 8% and plenty of time to relax with 30 days of annual leave, based on a 40-hour week;

  • An engaging onboarding programme and a buddy to mentor you, so you can start with confidence;

  • Unrivalled on-the-job training as you’ll be working with the industry’s top scientists, developing technology that doesn’t yet exist. And lots of opportunities to grow your career at our rapidly growing scale-up;

  • The opportunity to travel and even work abroad, as and when we’re opening research and production facilities across the globe;

  • An employer that is a proud ally for women and has a diverse and inclusive culture. People from over thirty countries inspire, care for and support each other. We encourage you to be or become who and what you want to be;

  • An open and transparent working environment: we listen to you and empower you to take initiative and get the job done in the way that works best for you;

Who you are

You thrive on designing changes, new features and systems, making a demonstrable impact on revolutionary machines. Working in a deep-tech scale-up, you embrace the dynamics of a fast-paced production environment. You effortlessly prioritise tasks at hand, securing smooth processes. And you harness your communication skills to work effectively with colleagues across the organisation.

You also have:

  • An MSc in mechanical engineering;

  • A strong understanding of precision design principles;

  • A passion for design of mechanical systems;

  • At least five years’ working experience in precision mechanics or high-tech equipment development;

  • Demonstrable experience of innovative design concepts;

  • Experience with SolidWorks and commonly used software such as Ansys, COMSOL and/or PLM;

  • A working command of spoken and written English, as English is our main language.
