System Architect

At Nearfield Instruments we're looking for a System Architect to join our team.
Full-time · Rotterdam

About the job

Nearfield Instruments develops and builds revolutionary 3D metrology systems. As a System Architect, you will take technical ownership of one or more critical subsystems within our complex machines. Bridging the gap between system-level requirements and engineering execution, you will translate performance ambitions into concrete designs and ensure they are delivered to the highest standard. Your work will directly influence the performance of our products and help accelerate the next generation of semiconductor technology.

What you’re going to do

You will be technically responsible for a subsystem from the first concept to volume production and service. Working across mechatronics, mechanics, electronics, software and control, you will cover all aspects to meet demanding performance requirements.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Translating system-level requirements into subsystem concepts, functional architecture and engineering specifications.

  • Taking technical ownership of subsystem development projects and aligning all disciplines and stakeholders.

  • Making architectural decisions on sensing, actuation, motion design, control strategy and integration approach.

  • Shaping the subsystem roadmap in line with company and customer needs

  • Leading trade-offs between performance, cost, manufacturability, reliability and serviceability.

  • Providing context and guidance to engineers and reviewing designs, simulations and integration plans.

  • Supporting industrialisation, validation and release into manufacturing and field use.

  • Collaborating with system architects, project managers and lead engineers to ensure technical excellence and on-time delivery.

Who you’ll be working with

You will join our high-impact, internationally diverse Mechatronics team and collaborate closely with colleagues in System Engineering, Electronics, Software, Control and Mechanics. Together, we design and realise machines that push the boundaries of semiconductor metrology. We share knowledge in an open environment, encourage autonomy, and value technical leadership. Your ideas will have a visible impact on our technology and product performance.

Who you are

You are a systems thinker with a strong technical foundation and a passion for precision. You enjoy working at the interface of disciplines and thrive in a dynamic, high-tech environment where every day brings new challenges.

You also have:

  • An MSc or PhD in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related field

  • Around 7 years of relevant industrial experience in multidisciplinary high-tech product development

  • Proven ability to translate performance requirements into subsystem architectures

  • Broad technical knowledge, ideally with a mechatronics background, but mechanical engineers with relevant skills are also encouraged to apply

  • Experience with multi-disciplinary development projects from concept to release

  • Strong communication skills to explain complex problems clearly to different stakeholders and guide teams effectively

  • Leadership qualities with the ability to take ownership, make decisions and coach others

  • A good command of English, both spoken and written

What do we offer?

You will be working in an innovative and openminded environment where you can direct impact the future of our company. Next to that we also provide an attractive package fitting in the industry and challenges ahead.
