(Senior) Mechatronics Engineer

Help drive the industrialisation and next-generation development of ultra-precision metrology machines used by the world’s leading chipmakers.

Full-time · Rotterdam

Accelerating quality testing is essential for chipmakers to meet the soaring demand for computing capabilities. To meet this need, Nearfield Instruments has developed revolutionary metrology machines. As a senior mechatronics engineer, you will help us scale up our production, while optimising and future-proofing our capabilities. Would you like to work at the forefront of metrology innovations while rapidly growing your career? Join us and experience the direct impact that your work has on our and our clients’ performance.

What you’re going to do

You will be responsible for one of the modules of our high-throughput 3D metrology solutions. Focusing in particular on the dynamics of the scanning probes, you will be working at scales ranging from micrometers to picometers. Not only will you continuously improve the module, you will also drive the industrialisation of our products.

Your main responsibilities include:

  • Devising, prioritising and updating your roadmap, covering the entire scope from architecture, (re)design, optimisation and controller tuning to issue resolution.

  • Identifying and resolving issues arising from production or commissioning. To this end you will collaborate closely with other departments, including Production, Service and System Engineering.

  • Occasionally travelling to clients across the globe to investigate and resolve complex assembly and commissioning issues onsite.

  • Optimising designs, tools, scripts and procedures, and taking the quality of our models and documentation to a higher level.

  • Coaching junior mechatronics engineers to help them grow their knowledge and skills, empowering them to embrace increasingly more autonomy.

  • Contributing to the development of new features and newer generations of our unique machines to meet future market demands.

Who you’ll be working with

You will join our rapidly growing, internationally diverse Mechatronics team. We are very tech savvy and are connected by a drive to design the best possible solutions. We foster an open, supportive atmosphere in which we welcome your ideas. Embracing a passion for delving into complex new technologies, we share knowledge and help each other. And we empower you to grow your role and career, giving you all the support and training you need.

What you’ll get

At Nearfield Instruments, you’ll be joining the most creative minds in science and technology from all over the world. We share a drive and have the potential to become the leading metrology instruments manufacturer. This is your chance to visibly contribute to growing our company and building revolutionary machines for the global semiconductor industry. The benefits we offer include:

  • A salary matching your skills, expertise and experience;

  • A one-year contract, which we hope to convert into a permanent contract.

  • Benefits like a good pension scheme, a commuting allowance, and a discount on your health insurance.

  • A holiday allowance of 8% and plenty of time to relax with 30 days of annual leave, based on a 40-hour week;

  • An engaging onboarding programme and a buddy to mentor you, so you can start with confidence.

  • Unrivalled on-the-job training as you’ll be working with the industry’s top scientists, developing technology that doesn’t yet exist. And lots of opportunities to grow your career at our rapidly growing scale-up.

  • An employer that is a proud ally for women and has a diverse and inclusive culture. People from over thirty countries inspire, care for and support each other. We encourage you to be or become who and what you want to be.

  • An open and transparent working environment: we listen to you and empower you to take initiative and get the job done in the way that works best for you.

Who you are

You thrive on deep-diving into the latest technologies and embrace the dynamics of a fast-paced production environment. To drive industrialisation, you have a keen eye for quality and consistency. And as disruptions in production or challenges during commissioning arise abruptly, you know how to think on your feet to secure effective solutions. In addition, you harness your communication skills to work and interact effectively with interdisciplinary colleagues across the organisation.

You also have:

  • An MSc in mechatronics engineering, mechanical engineering, control engineering or another relevant subject, and preferably a BSc in electrical or embedded engineering;

  • Seven years’ relevant working experience in a high-tech environment, preferably in semiconductor equipment manufacturing;

  • Knowledge and experience of mechanical design principles, model-based design, dynamics and signal analysis, controller tuning, sensing/actuation principals, statistics and coding in e.g. Python, MATLAB or Simulink;

  • A drive to learn all you need to know, working at the interface of mechanical engineering, electronics, software, metrology and physics;

  • A working command of spoken and written English, as English is our main language.
