Job description
Lead the industrialization and next-generation development of ultra-precision metrology machines used by the world’s leading chipmakers.
To keep pace with the soaring demand for semiconductor performance and precision, Nearfield Instruments is developing and building cutting-edge 3D metrology systems. As a seasoned engineer in the mechatronics team, you will take the technical lead for one or more critical modules or subsystems in our revolutionary machines. Bridging the gap between system-level ambitions and design execution, you'll translate performance requirements into clear, realizable concepts — and ensure they’re delivered with excellence.
Would you like to work at the forefront of high-tech innovation while playing a key role in our next stage of growth? Join us and lead the development of next-generation metrology solutions with direct impact on our clients and the semiconductor industry worldwide.
What you’re going to do
As a senior mechatronic engineer, you are technically responsible for a subsystem or module — from the first concept to volume production and beyond. Working closely with System Engineering, you will convert system-level KPIs into concrete subsystem requirements. You’ll lead or participate in multidisciplinary teams for the design and realization of complex high-precision modules, ensuring they meet specifications across performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost etc.
Your main responsibilities include:
Translating the performance requirements into subsystem concepts, functional architectures, and engineering requirements.
Taking technical ownership of development projects for your subsystem/module, ensuring alignment between disciplines and stakeholders.
Making key architectural decisions — including motion system design, sensing, actuation, control strategy, and system integration approach.
Shaping the subsystem roadmap to align proactively with both company and customer technology roadmaps.
Leading design trade-offs between performance, cost, manufacturability, and reliability.
Coaching and guiding engineers within your project team; reviewing designs, simulations, and integration plans.
Supporting the industrialization, validation, and successful release of your subsystem into manufacturing and field use.
Collaborating closely with system architects, project managers, and lead engineers to ensure technical excellence and on-time delivery.
Who you’ll be working with
You will join our high-impact, internationally diverse Mechatronics team and collaborate closely with System Engineering, Electronics, Software, Control, and Mechanics experts. Together with this tech-savvy team, we design and realize groundbreaking machines that redefine what’s possible in semiconductor metrology. We thrive in a knowledge-sharing, open environment where autonomy and technical leadership are encouraged — and where your ideas shape the direction of our technology.
Job requirements
Who you are
You’re a systems thinker with a solid technical foundation and a passion for precision. You can navigate complexity, lead design teams, and enjoy translating abstract requirements into tangible, working solutions. You are comfortable working in fast-paced, high-tech environments, and you’re energized by solving tough engineering challenges with impact.
You also have:
An MSc or PhD in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Control Engineering or a related field.
At least 10 years of relevant experience, with a strong track record in mechatronic system or module architecture.
Deep knowledge in areas such as: motion control, dynamics and vibrations, sensing/actuation, system modelling, and precision mechanics.
Experience in multi-disciplinary development projects, from concept to release.
Strong communication and leadership skills to align teams and drive technical decisions.
Proficiency with modelling and simulation tools (e.g. MATLAB, Simulink, FEM, Python) and a data-driven mindset.
A strong command of English, both written and spoken.
What you’ll get
At Nearfield Instruments, you’ll be part of a fast-growing, scale-up environment with the structure and ambition to become a global leader in 3D metrology. This is your opportunity to architect systems that solve tomorrow’s nanotechnology challenges.
We offer:
A salary matching your skills, expertise and experience.
A one-year contract, which we hope to convert into a permanent contract.
Benefits like a good pension scheme, a commuting allowance, and a discount on your health insurance.
A holiday allowance of 8% and plenty of time to relax with 30 days of annual leave, based on a 40-hour week
An engaging onboarding program and a buddy to mentor you, so you can start with confidence.
Unrivalled on-the-job training as you’ll be working with the industry’s top scientists, developing technology that doesn’t yet exist. And lots of opportunities to grow your career at our rapidly growing scale-up.
An employer that is a proud ally for women and has a diverse and inclusive culture. People from over thirty countries inspire, care for and support each other. We encourage you to be or become who and what you want to be.
An open and transparent working environment: we listen to you and empower you to take initiative and get the job done in the way that works best for you.
